Commerce Ministry to monitor on impact of each industry after new US President

BANGKOK, Jan 21 (TNA) -- A study is being conducted on each Thai industry which would affect after Donald Trump officially becomes the new US president, said Deputy Commerce Minister Sonthirat Sonthijirawong. Mr Sonthirat said a close monitoring will have to be implemented after Mr Trump announces his new US economic policy, especially on international trade. Thailand’s Commerce Ministry officials have been ordered to evaluate impacts which might have occurred on each industry and the issue would be raised with Washington officials in future talks, he said. It is too soon to evaluate now whether Thailand’s trade with the US would either increase or decrease, said Mr Sonthirat, adding that this issue would be discussed by the ministry officers next week. The fate of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement has become more uncertain after US President Donald Trump said that he has would withdraw the US from the agreement and Mr Sonthirat said that the move would be positive prospect for Thailand who is not yet a member of TPP. However, a study would have to be conducted on the impact of the changing in other global regions, for example, Brexit, he added. (TNA)
