Thai-Lao GBC held in Bangkok

BANGKOK, Jan 26 (TNA) -- Deputy Premier/Defense Minister General Prawit Wongsuwon said that the 23th Thai-Lao General Border Committee (GBC) meeting earlier today has expressed concerns over the planned explosion on the rock and rapid in the Mekong River by China, fearing the move would affect the natural waterways. Gen Prawit together with the Laos National Defense Minister Lieutenant General Chansamone Chanyalath jointly presided over GBC meeting at the Siam Anantra Hotel in Bangkok this morning. The Thai defense minister said the meeting discussed peace keeping operations along the borders of the both countries, as well as initiated more concrete cooperation on security. Moreover, General Prawit said both sides have also held talks on sports, education, and drugs prevention cooperation, in order to ensure confidence among the people of both countries on state operations, as well as discussed the worries for both parties, which included the planned bombing of the rock and rapid in the Mekong River by China, which both sides have expressed concerns that the mission would alter the natural waterways and channels. General Prawit said that he had also asked for cooperation from his counterpart in tracking down the movements of some activist groups which have been using some radio stations in Laos broadcasting faulty contents to attack Thailand in which the Laotian minister responded by saying he would more than willing to help. The deputy minister said he has tasked Secretary-General of the National Security Council (NSC) General Thawip Netniyom to travel to Laos PDR to coordinate with concerned Laotian security agency in two days.
