POLICE CHIEF DENIES SOME OFFICERS PROMOTING CERTAIN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

Jakarta, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - National Police (Polri) Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri has denied that there were officers in the force who were promoting a certain candidate for the presidential election later this year.

The police chief made the denial following President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's statement on Thursday that he had received information individuals in the National Defense Forces (TNI) and Polri might be involved in the "succes team" of a cetain presidential candidate.

"No, it is not true. All police personnel are neutral. There is no political partisanship in Polri. All policemen are neutral and they don't have any political interest," Danuri said at the State Palace here on Friday.

The president made the statement when addressing the participants of TNI and Polri leadership meetings at the State Palace Thursday. He said he had received information that certain TNI officers were engaged in practical politics, and certain Police officers had joined the "success" team of a certain presidential candidate.

"But I am certain that the information is not true," the president said, adding that the TNI and Polri's top officers would not make arbitrary statements and be careful in taking action.

The president reminded the TNI and Polri officers attending the meetings to be neutral in this year's general elections.

According to the president, the neutrality of TNI and Polri was highly expected by the political parties and all people of Indonesia.

"There are at least 38 political party leaders who share my opinion that the TNI and Polri should be neutral," the president said.

The president also said he was certain that TNI and Polri would shun practical politics and remain neutral in the upcoming general elections.

Yudhoyono also asked the TNI and Polri to explain to the people about their decision not to use their right to vote in the 2009 elections and the reason behind their neutrality.
