JAVANESE LANGUAGE IS FADING AWAY THESE DAYS

Semarang, C Java, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - In welcoming the international Mother Tongue Language Day on February 14, 2009, Javanese as a native language is getting abandoned by its society, an expert said.

"As a mother tongue, Javanese quality is fine, but its quantity is declining," an expert in culture of the Diponegoro University, Trias Yusuf, said here Friday.

Trias explained the educational factor at home and school as well as in media had caused the decline in the use of Javanese in the society.

He said that from the family which is the lowest level, the use of Javanese as a communication means between parents and children was considered no longer important. "We can see the result, parents tend to educate their children in Indonesian or other foreign languages they like instead of speaking Javanese," he said.
