GRANTING OF HONORARY DOCTORATE TO YUDHOYONO QUESTIONED
Bandung, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - A plan to grant an honorary doctorate to General (ret) Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono by the Senate of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) on the occasion of its anniversary on March 2, 2009 is questioned by some of the institute's graduates.
The President has not contributed any works of scientific value which would make him to deserve a doctorate, they said.
A graduate and activist of ITB, Fadjroel Rahman told Antara here on Friday that the granting of a doctorate would constitute a political flaw on the independence of ITB, as the public would suspect that this is some kind of support of the campus for the next presidential candidate.
"I strongly reject the granting of doctorate to Yudhoyono because there is no link between the president and science at the institute," Fadjroel said.
It seems there is a certain element or a group of management that links the title with science at the institute for Yudhoyono so as to make the decision, he said.
He further said that Ir Soekarno, the first president of Indonesia, received honorary doctorate of ITB because of his scientific achievements in civil engineering, while Hamka was awarded a doctorate from Al Azhar University for his scientific knowledge of Islam.
"I dare there is no such connection between science at ITB and Yudhoyono. He only has political adventures," Fadjroel said.
Another activist, Adamsyah Wahab, also deplored the planned granting of an honorary doctorate to Yudhoyono.
