DEFLATION PREDICTED TO OCCUR IN JANUARY
Jakarta, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - Deflation in Indonesia was predicted to occur in January, 2009 due to the decrease in fuel oil prices and public transportation fares, Chairman of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Rusman Heriawan, said here Friday.
"We hope January's deflation will be higher than December's deflation of 0,04 percent," Rusman said.
Rusman said BPS monitored that deflation was still possible in January despite the increase in rice price of about one percent since early this month.
On the drop in the transportation fares, Rusman said it would give enough influence although the decrease has not occurred in all areas.
He also said that if the transportation fares dropped simultaneously, it would give significant effects to the decrease in the commodity prices.
"However, the drop in the prices of basic commodities also needs time," he added.
