FLOOD INUNDATES FIVE VILLAGES IN SRAGEN

Sragen, C Java, Jan 31 (ANTARA) - Five villages in the Masaran area of Sragen district, Central Java, were flooded on Saturday after hours of terrential rains caused the Bengawan Solo river to burst its banks.

The inundated villages were Pringanom, Sidodadi, Kliwonan, Karangmalang, and Pilang, according to Masaran police chief Adjunct Commissioner Agus Irianto.

Worst hit by the flood were Pringanom and Pilang villages where the flood waters had risen to a height of one meter, inundating hundreds of houses and dozens of hectares of rice fields, Irianto said.

But there were no immediate reports of fatalities.

Farmers whose rice fields were submerged by the flood are now afraid their paddies will not yield anything in this year's harvest season.

Meanwhile, a report from Cilacap district, Central Java, said a number of villages in the region were also inundated by floods on Friday after two days of torrential rain.

Students at the Kroya state secondary school (SMPN-4) in Gentasari village were sent home because their class rooms were inundated.

"We sent all students home ahead of the normal time because the water level in their class rooms has risen to some 20 centimeters and on the school yard the water level is 40 centimeters high," SMPN-4 spokesperson Triyatun said.

She said all 730 students of the school were forced to go home early because the flood water in their class rooms continued to rise and disturbed teaching and learning activity.

Meanwhile, Suparno, the school attendant, said the flood which hit Cilacap this time was the worst in years.

He said the flooding had affected dozens of hectares of rice fields in the villages of Gentasari and Sikampu in Kroya sub district.

Zuhriyah (50), a farmer from Gentasari village, said he had to harvest his paddy earlier because otherwise it would be destroyed by the flood.
