GOVT TO SUBSIDIZE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT WITH RP2.5 TRILLION

Banda Aceh, Jan 31 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government will provide Rp2.5 trillion to subsidize development of public housing across the country in the 2009 fiscal year, Public Housing Minister Mohammad Yusuf Asy'ri said.
"The budget is for a subsidy for housing development for the people across Indonesia," the minister said here Saturday.
He made the statement after dedicating kindergarten, elementary and junior high school buildings in the village of Lambhung, Meuraxa, Banda Aceh, donated by viewers of private RCTI television station.
The minister said the government's subsidy would be enough for building 170,000 units of land housing and around 40,000 units of apartment.
"The housing subsidy will be distributed by the central government in cooperation with provincial administrations across the country. So who is quick will certainly get it," he said.
Regarding tsunami victims in Aceh that have not had homes the minister said that the problem was the affairs of the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR).
"That is the affairs and responsibility of the BRR. I have no data on the number of tsunami victims that have not yet received a house," he said.
He said the problem occurred possibly because the number of the families had increased. "It can happen because some members of the victim families, who were not yet married when the disaster occurred, might have got married now and therefore the families needed more houses," he said.
