Tasikmalaya, W Java, Jan 31 (ANTARA) - National political figure Amien Rais said here on Saturday that the military (TNI) and the police may not take sides and must remain neutral in the presidential election later this year.
"They must be neutral because they belong to the nation, the state, our country," he said after meeting with cadres of the National Mandate Party (PAN) in Karang Resik, Tasikmalaya, West Java.
Amien, who is former PAN chief, said the neutrality of the TNI and the police was a standard and a must. In view of that he said no TNI/police members must be allowed to move and take sides to support for the victory of a candidate.
He said he hoped the TNI and the police would remain present in the community in the future as basically the TNI and the police belonged to the people of Indonesia.
"TNI and the police are ours. No need to say they are above the nation or the state but they belong to us," he said.
Amien who is also former chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly said in the political arena the TNI and the police belong to all political parties, to all ethnic and religious groups. "They belong to the people from Sabang to Merauke," he said.
