RI TO FINISH REFORESTATION OF 5 MILLION HA THIS YEAR

Semarang, Indonesia, Feb 1 (ANTARA0 - Forestry Minister MS Kaban said the government has set a target to finish its reforestation program on five million hectares of parched land this year.

"Our target is to finish the 5-million ha reforestation program this year. Up to now we have already planted trees on 3.1 million hectares," the minister said after delivering a general lecture at the campus of Semarang's Teacher's Training Institute (IKIP) here on Sunday.

MS Kaban said that the most difficult task in planting the trees was in Java island becaue the government had to restore 30 percent of the forests.

"The forests in Java now cover only about 19 percent of the most-densely populated island in the country," he said.

Last week, the minister said the government was ready to carry out the reforestation of five million hectares of the present 27 arid land in Indonesia.

"We have reduced our denuded land from 30 million hectares to 27 million hectares. We are ready to carry out the reforestation of another five million hectares," the minister said at a ground breaking ceremony of a Gontor Boarding School branch in West Sumatra.

He said that the reforestation would be started this year and would be scheduled for completion by 2014.

Kaban said that the 27 million hectares of arid land were located in Java, Maluku, North Sumatra, Central Kalimantan.

The minister said that under the program the ministry of forestry in cooperation with the local people, different various types of trees will be planted. If the trees were growing well, the local people would get an incentive.

This program has been introduced among others in Java and Aceh province, the minister said.

"The people give a positive response to the program," he added.***
