INDONESIA NEEDS TO EXPORT RICE: VP
Tokyo, Feb 1 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that Indonesia needed to export rice after it had achieved self-sufficiency in the staple food in 2008.
"After we have achieved self-sufficiency in rice last year, we can continue developing the commodity and are now exporting it," the vice president said here on Sunday.
Kalla, who is also general chairman of the Golkar Pary, was on a stopover here to receive an honorary doctorate in the field of peace from the University of Soka and would later proceed to the United States, Belgium and the Netherlands.
He said that the fertile land in Indonesia would provide added value if advanced technology was also applied, so that with the increase in productivity, exports could be done.
The vice president made the remark after observing a 10 square meters hydrophonic rice exemplary project built under a building in a Ginza shopping center in Tokyo.
The vice president was impressed to learn that rice cultivated under the system in a limited area could be harvested up to four times a year.
However, the vice president said that the technology applied to the rice cultivation in the project could not be used in Indonesia because such a method could only be developed in restricted areas.
"The system uses electricity so that it would not be efficient to be developed on vast land," he said.
