PRESIDENT ASKS SYARIAH BANKERS TO SUPPORT REAL SECTOR
Jakarta, Feb 4 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked syariah (Islamic canon law) bankers to play a more active role in supporting efforts to develop the national economy's real sector.
Speaking at the opening of the Second Syariah Economic Festival at the Jakarta Convention Center here on Wednesday, the president said development of syariah economics should be tailored to support the agenda of national economic development.
"The syariah banking system should be more active in supporting real sector development through more efficient 'saving and investment' processes," the president said.
He said the syariah economic system had proven able to withstand the global financial crisis because of its positive characteristics in the promoting of justice and honesty to avoid speculative practices in transactions.
"Therefore the benefits of the syariah economic system should continue to be improved in order to be enjoyed not only by Muslims but by all people in the country without exception," the president said.
He said syariah economic development in Indonesia had a strong legal basis in Law No. 21/2008 on operation of syariah banks in the country.
In addition, the government has also issued national syariah securities.
The president said amid the present global financial crisis, syariah banking in Indonesia was growing at the formidable rate of about 35 percent per year.
"According to a report I received, syariah bank deposit funds increased from Rp5.72 trillion in 2003 to Rp28.1 trillion in 2007 and has continued to rise to Rp36.85 trillion in 2008," the president said.
He said financing through the syariah system also rose from Rp5.53 trillion in 2003 to Rp27.94 trillion in 2007 and was up again to Rp38.19 trillion in 2008.
With such a rapid development, the president said, syariah economic and banking players were expected to support the government's policy to maintain real sector and economic growth at 4.5 percent.
