KALLA FIRST FOREIGN VICE PRESIDENT RECEIVED BY US VP JOE BIDEN

Washington DC, Feb 5 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla was the first foreign veep received by the U.S. vice president Joe Biden after the inauguration of Barack Obama and Joe Biden as the US president and vice president in January 20.

"So, I was the first vice president received by vice president Joe Biden," Kalla told the press after his meeting with Joe Biden here on Thursday.

Joe Biden received Jusuf Kalla at the US veep office at the west wing of the White House, although the US cabinet hasn't yet been installed.

"But, I was then received as I come from Indonesia," Kalla said, adding that the meeting lasted for 45 minutes or longer that it was scheduled for 30 minutes.

In the meeting, both vice presidents talked about efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, Kalla said, explaining that he didn't ask any assistance from the US on the occasion.

"Vice president Joe Biden then asked, what he can do," Jusuf Kalla said.

Kalla said that Indonesia didn't ask anything, only suggested that the US can make efforts to immediately settle Palestinian issue.

Earlier, Jusuf Kalla congratulated US President Barack Obama on his intention to develop relations of mutual benefit and respect between the US and Muslim countries.

"Indonesia appreciates President Barack Obama who is developing a new direction in the relations of the US with Muslim countries," he said in a speech at the 57th National Prayers Breakfast in Washington on Wednesday.

In his speech titled "Creating Peace in Indonesia, Peaceful Settlement and Reconciliation", Kalla said President Obama had started a new era of leadership in which attention would be paid to the common interests and mutual respect in the USA's relations with Muslim countries.

Kalla and his entourage arrived in Seattle on Tuesday as part of his five-day visit to the United States.

The vice president is visiting the United States on the second leg of his three-nation tour which early took him to Japan to receive an honorary doctorate for peace from Soka University for his contribution in solving conflicts and creating peace in Indonesia.

Kalla will leave the US for Belgium on Saturday.
