VP ORDERS MAXIMUM POLICE ACTION AGAINST MEDAN INCIDENT`S PERPETRATORS

Washington DC, Feb 4 (ANTARA) - Visiting Vice President Jusuf Kalla said he had ordered Indonesian police to take the strongest possible action against the perpetrators of a violent rally in Medan that caused the death of a provincial councilor.

"I have discussed the incident with the National Police Chief and asked him to take strong action against the perpetrators of the deadly violence in North Sumatra," Kalla said at the Indonesian Embassy here on Wednesday night.

Kalla, who is making a 3-day visi in the US, said the anarchic acts in the practice of democracy should be dealt with seriously so that they would not be repeated in the future.

"Whoever the perpetrators and masterminds are, the police must take the strongest possible action against them," the vice president said.

A rally outside the North Sumatra Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) in Medan demanding the administrative transformation of the Tapauli region into a province last Tuesday turned violent with angry demonstrators eventually psychosocially attacking the council's chairman, Abdul Aziz Angkat.

As he was injured, police took Angkat to Gleni International Hospital where he died.

Doctors at the hospital said Angkat died of a heart attack but witnesses said he could have died of the injuries inflicted on him by demonstrators who resented his decision to postpone a DPRD plenary session to discuss the proposed creation of a new province within the boundaries of Tapanuli region.

So far, the police have named 11 suspects in their investigation of the incident.

About the North Sumatra demonstrators' demand for the formation of Tapanuli province, Kalla said it should come from people at the grass-root level, and , if accepted by the Provincial Legislative Council, be passed on to the central government and the House of Representatives (DPR).

"Creation of a new province is possible so long as it is beneficial to the local people. But in 2009 , no new administrative regions will be formed as we have decided to observe a moratorium on such initiatives," the vice president said.
