PRESIDENT PROVIDES FOOD PACKAGES FOR KARANGANYAR LANDSLIDE VICTIMS

Karanganyar, Indonesia, Feb 5 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has provided basic food packages for the victims of a landslide which killed six people on Friday last week in Nglegok village, Ngargoyoso subdistrict, Karanganyar district, Central Java.

The assistance, which consisted of 150 essential good packages from the president, was symbolically handed over to the victims by Karanganyar deputy head Paryono, in the company of Ngargoyoso sub-district head Much Sumarwoto, at Puntukrejo village hall, here on Thursday.

Paryono said that villagers living around the landslide areas had to remain alert, particularly when the rain fell, because the weather was now in bad conditions and was difficult to predict.

"We called on villagers to report to the authority as soon as possible if they see signals of or find natural disasters," he said.

According to the weather forecasts by the Meteorological and Geophysics Agency (BMG), the rain falls early this month are high so that it calls on all sides to increase alertness, particularly when rain falls at night.

On the occasion, Paryono also inspected the landslide diaster's Command Post in Sabrang hamlet, Ngargoyoso. Villagers were still working together to clean the ruins of the landslides which buried eight houses.
