MAN SAVES HIMSELF FROM TIGER`S CLAWS

Jambi, Indonesia, Feb 5 (ANTARA) - Sutiyono (36), a farmer from Muarojambi district in Jambi province, was mauled by a Sumatran tiger (Panthera Tigris Sumatrae) at 10:10 on Wednesday night but the victim was able to save himself from the beast's claws, police said here on Thursday.

Sutiyono of Mekarsari village at Kamper Illier subdistrict in Muarojambi managed to escape but his whole body was full of scratch wounds from the tiger's claws.

"Because of his wounds, Sutiyono is now being treated at a local public clinics," Muarojambi police spokesman Adjunct Commissioner Posma Lubis said.

He said Setiyono was the fourth victim after three other farmers in Jambi had been mauled to death by Sumatran tiger.

According to Posma Lubis, Setiyono sustained scratch wounds all over his legs and arms be he was able to kick the tiger's head and fled to his house where his family washed his wounds and took him to a nearby clinics for further treatment.

The victim then told the police that when he went to defecate behind his house at about 10 at night, a tiger appeared from nowhere and mauled him.

But he managed to kick on the tiger's head and finally the animal went away from its victim.

"Setiyono is still undergoing intensive treatment at the clinics," Posma Lubis said, adding that the victim's condition had started to get normal.

Lubis said Muarojambi police was cooperating with local Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) to capture the tiger alive.

He added that since the past two weeks, three farmers from Muarojambi, namely Iman Mujiyanto bin Suyut (21) and his father Suyut (58), and Raba'i bin Thalib (43) had been mauled to death by tigers.

They were mauled to death when they were working in their plantation area in the forest. Imam's body was even dragged by the tiger to as far as 20 kilometers away from the location where he was attacked.
