Thai Buddhists start Songkran celebration
BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) -- Thai Buddhists across the country start their Songkran celebration or the traditional Thai New Year by offering alms to monks and Buddhist rites.
Thai people participated in auspicious activities on the New Year day on Thursday morning. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration hosted a Buddhist merit-making in front of its office building.
Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang, city officials and Bangkokians gave alms to 191 Buddhist monks on Lan Kon Muang plaza.
As a symbol of cleansing and as a symbol of renewal, people poured water on a revered Buddha image.
Similar events marking the new beginning were held across Thailand before revelers head out for water splashing. Many turned up at temples to join other merit-making ceremonies and listened to monks’ sermons.
Some places like Bueng Kan city, parades of colorful flowers lit up festive atmosphere. Each float in processions are normally prepared by Buddhist temples.
Songkran Day is also the Elderly Day in Thailand in recognition of senior citizens’ contribution to the society.
Younger people pay respect to their parents, grandparents or respected individuals by sprinkling scented water on their hands which is called Rod Nam Dum Hua. The elderly then give them New Year blessings. (TNA)
