Turkey's President Holds Press Conference
Riyadh, February 05, SPA -- Turkish President Abdullah Gul stressed
that the two visits paid by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King
Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to Turkey in 2006 and 2007 marked a
historical turning point in the relations between the two countries.
President Gul affirmed Turkey's support for the peace initiative
proposed by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin
Abdulaziz for the achievement of peace in the region which was
endorsed by Arab summit in Beirut and later known as the Arab peace
initiative.
"Relations between the Kingdom and Turkey have been witnessing
progress in all fields and Turkey is keen on pushing them forward,
since they are now at their highest levels", President Gul said in a
press conference held at his residence in Riyadh today.
Within this context, he pointed to a number of agreements signed by
the two countries to enhance cooperation between them in various
fields, especially the ones of avoidance of double taxation,
transport and communications.
The Turkish President expressed his thanks to the Custodian of the
Two Holy Mosques for his kind invitation to him to visit the Kingdom,
since it came as an evidence of the distinguished Turkish-Saudi
relations.
"Ways of developing relations between the two countries and overall
developments in the region, in particular the tragic events witnessed
recently in Gaza Strip were discussed with the Custodian of the Two
Holy Mosques", President Gul added.
He reaffirmed Turkey's keenness on increasing the volume of
investments in the Kingdom, stressing that Saudi Arabia is the least
affected country in the global financial crisis.
"Turkish government is seeking to raise the level of the trade
exchange between Turkey and the Kingdom to reach $ 10 billions from $
5.5 billions", the Turkish president said.
Moreover, the Turkish president stated that relations between the
Kingdom and Turkey are not confined to the political and economic
aspects only but surpassed to researches and education, pointing to
the signing of an agreement between King Saud University, Turkish
Medical Research Authority and Istanbul University for Science and
Technology , and stressing that investment in Saudi Arabia is a
source of Turkey's pride.
President Gul spoke about his visit to Shoura Council, expressing his
happiness as he was the first president of an Islamic country
delivered a speech therein.
He also pointed to his visit to King Saud University, King Abdulaziz
City for Science and Technology and his meeting with Saudi and
Turkish businessmen.
The Turkish President referred also to his visit to Al-Kharj-based
center of developing the armored carriers in cooperation with a
Turkish Company, saying that he witnessed the development of the
armored carriers with the most high quality and technologies by Saudi
and Turkish engineers and technicians.
