TWO KEY N SUMATRA POLICE OFFICERS FIRED OVER COUNCILOR`S DEATH
Jakarta, Feb 6 (ANTARA) - National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri said he had decided to discharge two key police officials in Medan from their posts over the death of North Sumatra councilor Abdul Aziz Angkat.
Danuri told reporters at the presidential office here Friday, the two police officials were North Sumatra Regional Police Chief Inspector General Nanan Soekarna and Medan City Police Chief Senior Commissioner Anton Suhartono.
Angkat, chairman of the North Sumatra Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD), died in a violent demonstration at the DPRD building in Medan last Tuesday.
"We will soon appoint two other officers to fill the vacant posts in North Sumatra," Danuri said.
He said the decision to remove Soekarna and Suhartono from their posts was taken based on the results of an evaluation of their performance in relation with the events leading to Angkat's death. The evaluation was done by an internal affairs team sent to Medan by the National Police Headquarters.
"I ordered an internal affairs team to conduct an on-the-spot evaluation of the possibility of the local police's failure to perform their duties. It turned out some professional rules were not implemented in the field so that sanctions needed to be imposed on the two officers," the police chief said.
He said the decision to replace the two police officers was not taken under any political or public pressure but purely because of objective and professional considerations.
"The decision was by no means taken because of public or political pressure. There was no such pressure at all," he said.
Danuri said police had so far named 12 suspects in the violent demonstration but would continue their investigation into the incident until its mastermind was known and caught.
"We have sent a team from the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) to Medan to back up the North Sumatra Regional Police's investigators. We hope the cases of the arrested suspects can soon be passed on to the public prosecutor's office and we can net more suspects," Danuri said.
