OVER 2,500 FOREIGN DELEGATES TO ATTEND WOC IN MANADO
Jakarta, Feb. 6 (ANTARA) - More than 2,500 delegates from 121 countries will particpate in the World Ocean Conference on May 11-14, 2009, and in the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit on May 15, 2009, in Manado, North Sulawesi.
The CTI Summit is expected to be attended by six heads of state or governemnt, namely from Indonesia, the Philippines, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Malaysia and Solomon Islands, Widi A. Pratikto, the Marine and Fisheries Ministry's secretary general, told members of the United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) in Washington DC, recently.
The USINDO Forum of Discussion was also attended by representatives from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
Praktikto said that representatives of the United States and Australia, both supporting countries of the WOC and CTI, would also join the gathering in Manado.
The CTI Summit was expected to agree on concrete actions in marine conservation and management for sustainable marine resources development, he said.
Some participants in the USINDO Forum expressed their intention to take part in the WOC and CTI as they were interested in knowing the impact of climate change on oceans and the role of the oceans in mitigating the impact of climate change.
