GOVT TO TEMPORARILY STOP CONSIDERING REGIONAL REDIVISION PROPOSALS

Jakarta, Feb 6 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the government would temporarily stop considering initiatives or proposals for administrative redivision of existing provinces or districts as it needed to evaluate the results of past redivisions.

"Therefore, I call on the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) to call a moratorium on discussions of such initiatives or proposals. We are still making an evaluation of the developmental progress made by the new provinces and districts created in the past by redividing existing provinces and districts," he said after a limited meeting at his office here on Friday.

"Don't come up with other ideas that do not solve but only create new problems. Hence, I appeal to all circles in the government, the House of Representatives, the Regional Representatives Council, provincial and district legislative assemblies , journalists and power elites to look at regional division issues in a mature manner," the head of state said.

Yudhoyono said some of the new administrative regions formed in the past were a success but others were failures as they had been formed merely in the interest of certain political elites.

He said the government's stance on regional redivision was quite clear, namely that such initiatives must really result in faster development and improvement of the welfare of the people in the new regions.

The regional redivision issue was commented on by the president as Tuesday's violent rally in Medan which led to the death of North Sumatra Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD) chairman Adul Aziz Angkat was to demand the elevation of Tapanuli district's administrative status to that of a province. So far the region had always been part of North Sumatra province.
