HOUSE AGREES TO HALT REGIONAL REDIVISION PROCESSES
Jakarta, Feb 6 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) has agreed to the government's decision to halt all processes related to regional redivision proposals following Tuesday's violent demonstration demanding the establishment of Tapanuli province in North Sumatra.
The DPR's agreement to the halt in regional redivision processes was disclosed by Chozin Chumaidy, chairman of the House's Working Committee on Regional Redivision here on Friday.
Chumaidy said the government should discuss its decision to stop regional redivision processes with the House of Representatives because there were many bills on regional redivision which were still under deliberation in the House.
The government and the DPR are expected to adopt the same attitude and the same reasons which could serve as a reference to halt regional redivision processes, he said.
Chumaidy said the achivements of new adminstrative regions that had been formed by splitting existing regions should be reviewed. Those which were considered able to develop and make progress would be allowed to go on.
"But new regions which have been unable to develop and only posed a burden on the people and state budget, need to be returned to their former provinces or districts," he said.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Friday the government would temporarily stop considering regional redivision initiatives or proposals as it needed to evaluate the progress of new administrative regions created in the past.
"Therefore, I call on the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) to call a moratorium on discussions on regional redivision proposals. We are still evaluating the developmental progress of existing new regions," he said after a limited cabinet meeting at the presidential office.
"I appeal to all parties, the government, the House of Representatives, the Regional Rerpresentaives Council, provincial and district legislative assemblies, journalists and the polltical elites to view regional redivision issues in a mature way," the head of state said.
