DISCHARGE OF N SUMATRA POLICE CHIEF NORMAL

Medan, INDDONESIA, Feb 6 (ANTARA) - The discharge of two key police officials in Medan from their posts over the death of North Sumatra councilor Abdul Aziz Angkat is hailed as normal.

"The discharge is proof that the National Police chief is firm against the two police officers who are considered negligent in carrying out their duties," sociologist Prof. Dr Badaruddin said here on Friday.

He made the remarks in response to the discharge of the North Sumatra police chief and the Medan city police chief from their posts on Friday.

Earlier, National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri said he had decided to discharge North Sumatra Regional Police Chief Inspector General Nanan Soekarna and Medan City Police Chief Senior Commissioner Anton Suhartono.

Angkat, chairman of the North Sumatra Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD), died in a violent demonstration at the DPRD building in Medan last Tuesday.

"We will soon appoint two other officers to fill the vacant posts in North Sumatra," Danuri said.

He said the decision to remove Soekarna and Suhartono from their posts was taken based on the results of an evaluation of their performance in relation with the events leading to Angkat's death. The evaluation was done by an internal affairs team sent to Medan by the National Police Headquarters.

"I ordered an internal affairs team to conduct an on-the-spot evaluation of the possibility of the local police's failure to perform their duties. It turned out some professional rules were not implemented in the field so that sanctions needed to be imposed on the two officers," the police chief said.

Badaruddin said that the discharge of the two police officers was a warning for regional police chiefs so that they would learn a lesson from the incident to avoid the repetation of the same case in the future.

He said that the death of Aziz Angkat should be thoroughly investigated.

"The masterminds behind the incident have to be brought to court and process based on the law in force," Badaruddin said.

Angkat died of heart failure on Tuesday after being attacked by demonstrators who resented his decision to postpone a DPRD plenary meeting to discuss the proposed administrative transformation of Tapanuli district into a province.
