US, ASEAN agree to cooperate on anti-terrorism efforts

WASHINGTON, May 5 (TNA) -- The United States and ASEAN members have recognized the need to collaboratively act against terrorism and agreed to join forces in such efforts. The joint stance happened during the ASEAN-US Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Washington DC. On the same occasion, ASEAN expressed opposition to the possession of nuclear weapons for the sake of peace, especially that on the Korean Peninsula. Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said via the Skype application in Washington DC that participants in the meeting discussed transnational crime and terrorism and agreed with collective efforts to cope with terror attacks. The minister was attending the ASEAN-US Foreign Ministers’ Meeting set on May 2-7. Regarding the meeting’s stance on situations on the Korean Peninsula, Mr Don said it wanted North Korea to comply with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The meeting opposed the possession of nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula and called for efforts to solve problems there peacefully. “This is the overall stance of ASEAN. ASEAN uses the forum to confirm its old standpoint,” Mr Don said. (TNA)
