Ramathibodi Hospital successfully conduct robot-assisted brain surgery
BANGKOK, May 9 (TNA) - Ramathibodi Hospital successful conducted a brain surgery with an aid of robot, the first-ever of its kind in Asia to remove a small tumor from a patient.
Dean of Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Piyamitr Sritara said at the press conference that with the help of robot in the surgery to cure the brain cancer, the operation is accurate, safe and reducing risks and complications.
Neurosurgeon, Dr Sorayuth Chamnanvech said robot-assisted brain surgery is a treatment for patients, suffering from brain tumour, less than three centimetres in diametre, epilepsy and Parkinson's disease.
The data from the computerized tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is put into a computer to guide the robot, so it can precisely calculate the position of the tumour.
The robotic assistance is more effective than a conventional procedure.
The half-an-hour operation successfully removed the two – centimeter tumour from the 77- year-old patient, who was released from hospital to recover at home. The cost of the brain operation is 100,000 baht. (TNA)
