NETHERLANDS ASKS RI TO BRIDGE WEST-ISLAM RELATIONS

The Hague, Feb 8 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that the Dutch government has asked Indonesia to help maintain relations between western and Muslim countries.

"Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende has asked Indonesia to play an important role in maintaining good relations between western and Muslim countries," the vice president said after a meeting with Balkenende here on Saturday.

The vice president was previously received by the Dutch prime minister at his Cats Huis residence. The meeting lasted for 45 minutes.

Prime Minister Balkenende was actually attending a European Union meeting in London, Britain. But he took the opportunity to fly back to the Hague to receive the Indonesian vice president.

"The Dutch prime minister asked Indonesia to bridge the relations between Muslim countries and western nations. But I also asked that they would adopt a fair attitude," Kalla said.

Previously, US Vice President Joe Biden had specifically asked Indonesia to make a peace proposal on the Palestinian conflict. The same thing was also expressed by the deputy prime minister of Belgium.

"Almost all asked Indonesia to play an important role in the peace process in the Middle East and in maintaining the relations between western nations and Muslim countries," the vice president said.

Kalla said that Indonesia hailed the request of the western countries but he also told the western nations that they should also act justly and adopt a fair attitude.

The Indonesian vice president said that apart form political matters, he also discussed with Balkenende economic relations between the two countries. After all, the vice president said, almost all Indonesia's crude palm oil exports to Europe arrived through the Rotterdam port.

In the meantime, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo also joined the vice president's tour of the Hague. The governor also held a meeting with his counterpart to discuss matters relating to water management.

Jusuf Kalla said that Indonesia could learn a lesson from the Netherlands' experience in the water management.

But the important thing, Kalla said, is that the people should be aware of the importance of water management and of abandoning the habit of disposing wastes at will.

"The important thing is the willingness of the people to move to flats and forget their habit of disposing garbages at will," the vice president said.***
