RI STRATEGIC FOR US INVESTMENT: KADIN OFFICIAL
The Hague, Feb 8 (ANTARA) - Companies in the United States have considered that Indonesia is a strategic country to make investments, chairman of the Committee for US Affairs (KIKAS) of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), Sofyan Manandi said.
"The United States companies now are more interested in Indonesia. For them, Indonesia is a strategic partner," the KIKAS chairman said on the sidelines of Vice President Jusuf Kalla's visit to The Hague on Sunday.
Previously, on February 5, 2009, Kalla held a meeting with US companies in Washington DC. About 30 companies, such as ExxonMobil, Conoco Oil, pharmacies firms and other companies, attended the meeting.
Wanandi said that under President Barack Obama, the United States changed a lot in the way it treated and viewed Indonesia. Therefore, it was now a good momentum for Indonesia to increase its economic relations with the United States.
"We need to be pro-active. We should not just wait," Sofyan Wanandi said.
In the meeting, according to Sofyan Wanandi, the vice president emphasized that it was now time for US companies to make their investment in Indonesia.
During a question and answer session, US mining companies asked for implementing regulations on the law on mining in order to avoid mis perceptions.
Wanandi said that the vice president promised to issue soon a government regulation or a ministerial decree as an implementing rule and technical guidance on mining investment.
In the meantime, ExxonMobil in the meeting asked Indonesia's consent to increase its oil production at Cepu's Banyu Urip oil field from 10,000 barrel per day to a about 20,000 - 30,000 barrels per day.
"In principle, the United States companies positively welcome the investment opportunities in Indonesia," the KIKAS chairman said.
Wanandi was taking part in the vice presidential tour to four countries of Japan, the United States, Belgium and the Netherlands.***
