RI WANTS ITS MINERAL RESOURCES BE EXPLOITED BY DIFFERENT COUNTRIES: VP

The Hague, Feb 8 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that the government wanted Indonesia's natural resources, oil and gas in particular, to be exploited by companies from different countries so that it would be able to make comparison and avoid dependence.

"We do not want that our natural resources, oil and gas in particular, are exploited by one country (company)only. We want to have comparison," the vice president said after a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende here on Sunday.

In the meeting, the Dutch prime minister said that Dutch oil company Shell wanted to take part in the exploitation of Natuna D-Alpha oil field block which was now put out to tender.

The vice president welcomed the Shell desire to take part in the Natuna project but the Indonesian government had not yet taken any decision.

Kalla said that there were four companies which had expressed interest in the cultivation of Natuna D-Alpha Block. The firms were ExxonMobil from the United States, Shell from the Netherlands, one company from China and another one from Europe.

The vice president said Shell had the skills but the Indonesian government had not yet decided one.

So far, the vice president said, Shell had been doing many projects in the down-stream areas by running oil stations. Therefore, the government asked that Shell would also do business in the up and meddle stream areas in the oil refineries.

"But the important thing for the government is that Pertamina (state-owned oil and gas firm) would play the bigger role in the project," Kalla said.

In the meantime, M Lutfi, chairman of the National Capital Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), said Dutch oil company Shell had a bigger chance to cultivate Natuna D-Alpha Block if it was prepared to relocate its oil refinery plant from Singapore to Indonesia.

"If Shell is willing to accept our request to relocate its oil refinery process from Singapore to Indonesia, I am sure its bargaining position is stronger than those of other competitors," he said.***
