NAVAL SHIP LEAKS AFTER STRONG WAVES SMASH ITS FRONT PART

Surabaya, E Java, Feb 8 (ANTARA) -Indonesian warship KRI Kupang-582 of the Eastern Fleet Command had developed a leak and almost sank after huge waves hit it in the waters west of Surabaya, East Java.
The command's spokesman, Lt Col Toni Syaiful, said here on Sunday the ship with a crew of 26 and under the command of Captain Suyadi was on its way to rescue fishermen whose boat had capsized.
However "before reaching the location of the fishermen big waves smashed the front door of the naval vessel through which cargo is loaded and discharged, causing a serious lead," he said.
He said the ship left the command post at around 5 pm on Saturday and because the accident occurred in the night, repair was difficult. The captain then sent a distress signal to nearby warships.
"At that time KRI Slamet Riyadi on its way to Surabaya received the signal and at 4.30 am the next day the ill-fated ship's 26, documents and weapons could be evacuated to Slamet Riyadi," he said.
