RI EXTENDS DEEP CONDOLENCES OVER BUSHFIRE VICTIMS IN AUSTRALIA

Brisbane, Feb 9 (ANTARA)- Indonesia through its embassy in Canberra has extended deep condolences over dead victims of massive bushfire in Victoria, Australia, with the death toll has reached 108 people.

"We are sad to keep abreast of the massive bushfire which left many people dead in the state of Victoria. We extend deep condolences over the victims' families," Samsu Rizal, ad-interim charge d`affaires of the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra told Antara here on Monday.

He also hailed measures which have been taken by the Federal government and the State of Victoria government in handling Australia's deadliest bushfire since 1983.

"We hope the goverment's measures will be effective in preventing further cases of fire," Samsu said.

He said that the Indonesian embassy in Canberra also expressed high appreciation to Indonesian people living in Australia who have provided donation to help the victims.

"We should note that Australia is our close neighbouring country that always gave assistance when Indonesia was hit by natural disasters," the diplomat said.

Citing an example, Samsu said when tsunami and devastating earthquake destroyed part of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province and Nias Island in North Sumatra province in 2004-2005, Australia was one of neighboring countries which assisted Indonesia since the begining.

Samsu also expressed hope that Indonesian people especially in Victoria should remain on alert and should not panic and could continue their activities.
"If they have problems relating to the natural disaster, we hope they can contact the nearest Indonesian representative office or relevant agencies of the Australian government," he said, adding that Indonesian citizens living in Australia based on survey results in 2006 amounted to 50,975 people.

It was also reported that a massive bushfire tore through several small towns north of Melbourne on Saturday night.
