NGURAH RAI AIRPORT CLOSED DURING HINDU SAKA NEW YEAR

Denpasar, Bali Province, Feb. 10 (ANTARA) - Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali Province will be closed for 24 hours during Bali's Hindu Icaka New Year 1931 known as 'Nyepi' (the day of silence) to be observed on March 26, 2009.
Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika had sent a letter to the ministers of transportation, foreign affairs, home affairs, and communication and informatics, regarding the planned one-day closure of the airport, Ida Bagus Made Parsa, head of the Bali transportation, information and communication office, said here on Tuesday.
The Ngurah Rai airport authorities have also sent notices to domestic as well as foreign airways about the temporary closure so that they could anticipate and would not fly on that day, he said.
The airport will be closed from Thursday, March 26, at 6.00 am until Friday, March 27, at 6.00 am local time.
During the 'Nyepi' New Year, the Balinese Hindu, in accordance with their traditions, are not allowed to make a fire, do any activity, travel, and have entertainment or amusement.
During Nyepi holiday, the tourist island of Bali will become a silent place, with most Balinese staying in doors and tourists asked to keep a low profile.
The airport closure during the 'Nyepi' holiday will be the 11th since 1999.
