FORESTRY MINISTER INAUGURATES 137-HA URBAN FOREST IN PANGKALPING

Pangkalpinang, Bangka Balitung, Feb. 10 (ANTARA) - Forestry Minister MS Kaban inaugurated a 'Green Revolution Pangkalpinang City' 2009 program located in Tua Tunu Village, here on Tuesday.
The 137-ha 'multipurpose' urban forest would be useful for the younger generation even in the next 20 years, the minister said.
Indonesia has around 30 million hectares of arid land and about 1.3 million hectares of them have been rehabilitated in 318 river basin areas since 2003 up to 2008.
Bangka Belitung Governor Eko Maulana Ali hoped that the urban forest could help support the Visit Bangka Belitung Year 2010.
Pangkalpinang Mayor Zulkarnaim Karim said the cost of the urban forest development was Rp89 billion expected to be derived from local and national state budgets as well as private companies.
The urban forest project would be expanded to cover a total area of 180 hectares, he said.
