HOUSE SPEAKER: PERPPU ON CORRUPTION COURT NOT NEEDED

Jakarta, Feb 10 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono has said a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on the formation of a special corruption court was not yet needed.
Laksono said at the State Palace here on Tuesday he was optimistic the House Special Committee on the Corruption Court Bill would be able to complete its task before its term in office expires on September 30, 2009.
He said he had reminded the special committee and the House faction leaders to complete the legislation on the corruption court before their term in office (2004-2009) comes to an end.
Although the House members would be busy in legislative election campaigns in April 2009, Laksono said, he was optimistic that the House special committee on the corruption court bill would complete its task before September 30, 2009.
"But remember that it is not the task of DPR alone but the government as well," Laksono said.
Earlier, the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) had asked the government to prepare a Perppu on the formation of a Corruption Court because it was feared the DPR would not be able to complete its task to pass a law on the court's formation before its term in office was over.
According to a Constitutional Court decision in 2006, the DPR and the government had until the end of 2009 to enact a law on formation of a corruption court.
