KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- AirAsia Bhd has commenced its inaugural flight from Pontianak, Indonesia, to Kuching (Sarawak, Malaysia) and will fly seven days a week. In a statement Monday, AirAsia said Supadio International Airport General Manager Bayuh Iswantoro and the Indonesian media were onboard the flight which landed at the Kuching International Airport at 1.50 pm. Chief Executive Officer Aireen Omar said the low-cost carrier was excited to celebrate and welcome the flight from Pontianak to Kuching. “We are confident that Indonesian tourist arrivals to Sarawak will continue to grow with the commencement of this route and boost Sarawak’s target to attract five million tourists this year. “On the other hand, Sarawakians can now enjoy the best of Pontianak, dubbed as the ‘Equator City’, to fly daily on direct flight and low fare,” she said in a statement. Aireen added that the latest route from Kuching was a part of AirAsia's initiative and commitment towards developing Sarawak as a top holiday destination and a regional hub for travellers to Borneo. “We feel there is a lot of growth potential in Sarawak. We are currently reviewing direct connectivity from ASEAN countries, China, Indochina, North Asia, Australia and many other,” she added.
