NORTH SULAWESI HIT BY 5.6 EARTHQUAKE
Manado, Feb 11 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted North Sulawesi again at 12:17 local time at noon on Wednesday but there was no immediate information on casualties or material damage.
The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said the epicenter of the quake was located 0.15 degrees southern latitude and 124.55 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 kilometers below sea level.
It was located some 181 kilometers southeast of North Sulawesi and Gorontalo, BMG spokesman Mudjianto said, adding that the earthquake was not potential create tsunami, and therefore the people were asked to stay calm.
Wednesday's earthquake was the third in North Sulawesi and Gorontalo in the past three days.
On Monday, February 9, 2009, a tectonic earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale rocked Gorontalo province at 5.47 pm Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
The BMG said the epicenter of the earthquake was located 1.25 degrees northern latitude and 123.44 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 23 km, some 88 km northeast of Gorontalo.
Gorontalo's neighboring province of North Sulawesi early this month was also hit by tectonic quake measuring 5.5 on the RS.
The quake was located in 4.47 degree north latitude and 127.54 degree eastern longitude. Its epicenter was about 223 km Northeast of Melonguane, North Sulawesi, in a depth of 66 km below sea level.
On Saturday afternoon, a tectonic quake with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter Scale hit Maluku waters on Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday, an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale also rocked Manokwari, West Papua province at 4.56 a.m (WIB).
The BMG said the epicenter of the earthquake in Mankwari was located at 0.46 degrees southern latitude and 132.82 degrees eastern longitude at a dept of 61 km, some 145 km northwest of Manokwari.
Manokwari was rocked with a 7.6-magnitude earthquake on June 4, 2009, killing four people and seriously injuring 31 others.
