INDONESIA NEEDS TO PLAY LEADING ROLE IN ASEAN SUMMIT IN THAILAND
Padang, Feb 10 (ANTARA) - Indonesia was expected to play a leading role in settling various international issues in a bid to boost ASEAN integrity during its summit in Thailand, an observer said.
Virtuous Setyaka S. Ip. M.Si, an international political analyst of the Andalas state university here said on Tuesday that Indonesia needs to play a bigger role in building internal ASEAN and ASEAN partnership in Asia and East Asia.
The ASEAN Summit, according to him, will discuss issues on global economic crisis, fear for protectionism in the international market and reforms of the international organization.
In addition, the discussions at mullateral meetings will likely highlight undisputed issue on blue print including the importance of ASEAN people's integration.
However, the most important thing for Indonesia is building an image of a country which is pro-democracy, regional market recovery, and improving social and cultural welfare.
"It's necessary for Indonesia to discuss security and welfare in political, economic, social, cultural and environmental sectors through constructive intervention in the framework of preventive diplomacy," he said.
