INDONESIA URGED TO ENCOURAGE IOC TO CREATE PEACE IN MIDEAST
Jakarta, Feb 10 (ANTARA) - The British Government believed Indonesia is able to play a crucial role in Islamic world especially in pushing members of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) to create peace in the Middle East.
The remarks were made by British State Minister Bill Rammell in his speech at the Center for Dialogue and Cultural Cooperation in Jakarta on Tuesday.
"We believe Indonesia will be able to play this role by exerting its influence on other OIC member countries to ensure that they would show more tolerance and eagerness in reaching a compromise which had contributed great benefits to the Indonesian people in last decade," he said.
According to Rammell, Indonesia played a key role which could also be adopted by the other Moslem countries by showing that being a country which respected the religion did not mean it surrendered to those who were trying to force a certain belief.
"Or perhaps, it is also important to observe what has cause the people to sympathetize extremists and prove that progress in this issue can be made without intolerance or sowing hatred," he said.
Furthermore, Rummel said Britain will take a similar step through various contacts in Israel and some meetings in the European Union and the United States.
"Only under close cooperation like Indonesia and Britain or similar concern and efforts to seek a spirit and determination, the differences will not be regarded as a source of conflict," he said.
He also said that his visit to Indonesia was based on this world largest archipelagic country's influence on world events.
However, Rummell still referred to Indonesia's success in passing the long distance and difficult strip from authoritarianism and conflicts.
Rammell was in Jakarta for a two day visit (Feb 9-10) to strengthen the close relations between the two countries, during which he also met with Hassan Wirajuda and had a series of discussion with members of the Indonesian civil society.
