GOLKAR TO COLLECT LEADERS FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Jakarta, Feb 11 (ANTARA) - Golkar Party will collect seven names to be selected at a national leadership meeting as the party's presidential and vice presidential candidates for the election in July this year.
"Seven is a maximum, but they can be for both presidential and vice presidential candidates at the same time," the party's vice general chairman, Agung Laksono, said at the parliament building here on Wednesday.
Laksono who is currently the House Speaker said that selection of the party's presidential and vice presidential candidates would not be done through a party convention like in 2004 but it would still involve all party regional leaders from districts or cities across the country.
In connection with it he said Golkar had already sent a form to party executive boards in the districts and towns across the country to be filled in with seven names and later returned the central executive board.
He said he hoped all the forms would be received by the central executive board by March.
He said the names that came from the party executive boards in the districts and towns would then be arranged to find which of them entered into the big seven.
He said the seven names chosen would then be surveyed by a survey agency before being selected to become the party's presidential and vice presidential candidates.
The final say to determine who would really be the candidates however will be in the hands of the special national leadership meeting that will be held after the implementation of the legislative elections on April 9.
Agung said the mechanism for selecting the presidential and vice presidential candidates was democratic and effective and efficient in terms of cost and time.
A political observer from the Paramadina University, Dr Yudi Latif, said earlier that Golkar seemed still to be hesitating to present its own presidential and vice presidential candidates for the election while other big parties have already signalled their candidates and some of them have even confirmed the names they would nominate for the presidential and vice presidential election in July.
