MANPOWER MINISTRY ADVISED TO COOPERATE CLOSELY WITH PLACEMENT AGENCY

*

Jakarta, Feb 11 (ANTARA) - The Foreign Affairs Ninistry urged the Manpower Ministry (Depnakertrans) to cooperate closely with the National Agency for Indonesian Workers Placement and Protection (BNP2TKI) in the handling of Indonesian workers problems overseas.
Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said here on Wednesday that close cooperation between Depnakertrans and BNP2TKI was needed to lessen the burden of foreign affairs ministry in handling Indonesian worker (TKI) problems abroad.
He said that foreign affairs ministry's representatives abroad had so far been able to handle TKI's downstream problems while their upstream causes were not handled well.
"I have always said that the TKI problems should be handled well both in the upstream and downstream. Our representative offices overseas have always been forced to handle problems in downstream which are actually a result of upstream problems," Wirajuda said.
He said that the foreign ministry only tackled the end part of a problem process so that it called on the Depnakertrans and BNP2TKI to build a close cooperation.
"The close coordination is needed so that our burden could be reduced. That's hour hope," the foreign minister said.
He sited non-transparent dispatches of Indonesian workers abroad as an example of upstream problems.
"Their arrivals abroad and work contracts must be made clear so that Indonesian embassies would follow it well because otherwise it would be a deviation, let alone if the dispatches are carried out illegally," the foreign minister said.
He said that the Indonesian embassies were often not informed of a case in which an Indonesian worker had a problem with his or her employer.
"So, basically the problem taking place in the downstream is caused by the fact that matters in the upstream are not handled well. The establishment of the BNP2TKI in the past was expected handle this. That is what the foreign ministry hoped," he said.***3***
