NU GRANTS SCHOLARSHIPS TO MOSLEM STUDENTS FROM THAILAND

Jakarta, Feb 14 (ANTARA) - One of Indonesia's main Islamic organizations, the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), has given scholarships to 10 Moslem students from southern Thailand to pursue further studies in Indonesia.

NU deputy secretary general Iqbal Sullam said here on Friday five of the Thai students would study at the Islamic University in Malang and the other five at Darul Ulum Islamic University.
"They are allowed to choose any academic discipline except medicine," he said.
He said NU would pay for the cost of their accomodations, education and Indonesian-language training.
The students from Pattani were expected to arrive in the country in May-July to study the Indonesian language, and in September they would begin attending lectures, he said.
Iqbal said this was the first scholarship program for Moslems in Pattani which was recently torn by conflict.
"In the future we will try to give scholarships for studies up to master's degree level," he said.
