Samsung unveils world's first solar-powered mobile phone

SEOUL, Feb. 13 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's second-largest maker of mobile phones, said Friday it has unveiled a solar-powered cell phone for the first time in the world.

The "Blue Earth" phone is equipped with a solar panel located on the back of the
handset's battery, generating enough electronic power to charge the battery to
make a call.
A 10-minute charge from the solar panel would allow a user to make a call for
three minutes, Samsung officials said.
The new device "demonstrates our small but meaningful commitment to the future
and our environment," said JK Shin, an executive vice president at Samsung.
The phone is also made from recycled plastic, which is extracted from water
bottles, helping to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions in the
manufacturing process, Samsung said.
Samsung will show off the new phone at a technology fair in Spain next week, the
company said. Pricing details weren't disclosed.
