Samsung dominates N. American flat-panel TV market in Q4

SEOUL, Feb. 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. grabbed the top spot in the North American market for flat-panel TVs in the fourth quarter of last year, a market researcher said Friday.

According to DisplaySearch, Samsung secured a 20.4 percent market share,
breaching the 20-percent mark for the first time. The figure was up 1.1
percentage points from 19.3 percent the previous quarter.
"Samsung's strong flat-panel TV share can be attributed to success in both LCD
and plasma market segments, ranking first and second, respectively," the
researcher said.
Samsung has held the No. 1 spot since the third quarter of 2007.
The company took a 19.2 percent share of the liquid crystal display (LCD) TV
market in North America in the fourth quarter and secured a 27.8 percent share in
the plasma TV market.
Japan's Sony Corp. took the No. 2 ranking in flat-panel and LCD TVs in the
October-December period.
In the plasma TV market, Japan's Panasonic Corp. was the top market share holder
with 46.9 percent during the same period.
Meanwhile, Samsung ranked first in the U.S. digital TV market with a 26.1
percent share, followed by Sony.
