(LEAD) Somali pirates-S Korean abductees-release

SEOUL, Feb. 13 (Yonhap) -- Five South Koreans and 18 Filipinos who had been held captive by Somali pirates off the coast of Kenya were released the previous night, news reports said Friday.

The Associated Press, quoting an unnamed Kenya diplomat, said all 23 crew members
of the Japanese-owned cargo ship were safely released from nearly three months in
captivity.
Seoul officials had said earlier Friday that the release of the 23 captives, who
had been held hostage since Nov. 15, was imminent as negotiations on the release
and ransom were almost complete.
The MV Chemstar Venus, owned by a Japanese shipping company, was hijacked on Nov.
15 in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden.
