SEOUL, Feb. 15 (Yonhap) -- Three construction workers were killed and seven
others were injured on Sunday after a construction site in the southern outskirts
of Seoul caved in during excavation, police said.
The accident took place early Sunday morning after an H-beam collapsed at a
construction site for SK Chemicals' research center in Pangyo, which is being
developed as a new satellite city of Seoul, said police.
A total of 10 construction workers were working at the time of the accident, they
said.
All of the workers were rescued after being trapped under heaps of earth, rubble
and construction materials, but three of them died later, they noted.
SK Chemicals, a subsidiary of SK Group, has been building the new research and
development center, designed to have six floors underground and nine floors above
ground, since last September.
Police said the accident occurred probably because the ground surrounding the
construction site has been weakened by recent precipitation and unseasonable
warming.
