PT TIMAH TO PRODUCE 300,000 TONS OF EXTRACTED ASPHALT
Pangkalpinang, Feb 15 (ANTARA) - PT Timah plans to produce 300,000 tons of extracted asphalt this year following a trial production.
"We will carry out the trial production for the domestic market. The asphalt extraction plant is PT Timah's business unit in Buton, Southeast Sulawesi," its president director, Wachid Usman, said here on Sunday.
He said demand for asphalt continued to increase each year while the domestic supply remained below what is needed.
The company's management has decided to produce two kinds of asphalts and one of them is intended for special purposes such as in airport development.
Wachid said the asphalt extraction plant was needed to give an added value to the asphalt from Buton previously sold merely as raw material.
The asphalt extraction pilot project was earlier carried out at the company's mettalurgical center in Muntok, West Bangka.
In producing it the company will cooperate with an investor. "With the price of asphalt sharply increasing the propect of the asphalt extraction plant will be very promising," he said.
Asphalt from Buton used to be sold as a raw material at a price of US$250 per ton. After it is processed at the plant its price may double, he said.
He said asphalt from Buton had so far been used for second-class road development but in the future it could be used as a hotmix and for national road development.
The PT Timah has studied asphalt business in Buton since five years ago and earlier tried to improve the raw product before finally decided to develop the extraction plant for further processing the Buton asphalt.
The domestic production could only meet half of the country's asphalt consumption of 1.1 million metric tons a year. "We hope in the future our dependence on imported asphalt could be reduced following the operation of the extraction plant in Buton, he said.
