N. Korean stamp sold for US$2,000 in auction
SEOUL, Feb. 16 (Yonhap) -- A North Korean stamp used to send mail from North Korea to South Korea shortly before the outbreak of the 1950-53 war was recently sold at an auction for 2.85 million won (US$2,000), a stamp collecting organization said Monday.
The stamp was used to dispatch a registered mail to Seoul from the North Korean
city of Cheongjin on June 22, 1950, three days before the outbreak of the Korean
War, and was sold by an unidentified collector, the Philatelic Federation of
Korea said.
The buyer of the stamp, printed Feb. 9, 1949, was also unidentified.
"The North Korean stamp is not the most expensive in postal history, but it is
quite significant as it was one of the stamps used for cross-border mail before
the outbreak of the Korean War," an official at the federation said.
