SAUDI ENVOY TO HOLD GATHERING FOR MASS MEDIA IN JAKARTA

Jakarta, Feb 17 (ANTARA) - Saudi Ambassador to Indonesia Abdulrahman Mohammed Amen Al-Khayyat said his embassy was planning to hold a press gathering in Jakarta as part of efforts to enhance relations between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.

Mass media are very important to disseminate information on various events and what have been done by a country both at home and abroad, the ambassador said at a meeting with ANTARA's President Director Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf here Tuesday.

"We will provide you with any kind of information and documents about our activities on economy, industry, hajj pilgrimage and information among other things to strengthen the close relations between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia," the ambassador said.

He thus asked ANTARA to help invite other mass media groups to attend the planned gathering for mass media which would be arranged in the near future.

He expressed hope that mass media would increase their coverages about activities on various aspects made by the Saudi government both at home and abroad.
Abdulrahman cited as an example that Saudi Arabia was the first country that supported every effort to create peace in Gaza but he considered the number of media reports about it was still inadequate.
Among activities made by the Saudi government abroad were those in Aceh including the construction of housing complex and medical center, he said.

Aceh is Indonesia's westernmost province which was hit by a giant earthquake measuring nine on the Richter scale followed by tsunami which had claimed no less than 200,000 lives in December 26, 2004.
In an effort to cement the bilateral relations, the Saudi government has also established cooperation with education institutions in Indonesia including Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN), he said.

In addition, the Saudi government has also set up the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences (LIPIA) whose former name was the Institute of the Arabic Language under the guidance of the Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, he said.

The ambassador pointed out that LIPIA and the Indonesian government had signed an MoU to build the latter's branches in West Sumatra, East Java and South Sulawesi in the future and open programs on general subjects as well as continue to provide scholarships for students, Abdurrahman said.

LIPIA continues to prepare and produce moderate Muslim cadres through Islamic teachings based on Al Quran and hadits (collection of traditional stories on words or deeds of the Prophet Muhammad that serve as guidance to understand and solve religious questions).

LIPIA has produced 8,604 alumni who now take part in Indonesia's development. Some of them serve as leaders of organizations, teachers, judges, governors, vice governors as well as members of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the House of Representatives (DPR).
