PRESIDENT TO CHAIR SUB-REGIONAL COOPERATION MEETINGS IN HUA HIN
Jakarta, Feb 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is to chair two annual consultative meetings for sub-regional cooperation on the sidelines of the 14th ASEAN Summit in Hua Hin, Thailand, later this month, a minister said,
"President Yudhoyono will chair the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia- Philipines - East Asean Growth Area (BIMP EAGA) and the IMT GT (Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle) annual consultative meetings," Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda said after a meeting with the President at Halim Perdanakusuma airport here on Tuesday.
The minister explained that BIMP-EAGA was a sub-regional cooperation scheme involving Indonsia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, and the Philippines on sub-regional development in the Southeast Asian region while IMT-GT was a similar scheme among Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
"They are sub-regional cooperation frameworks for better results," Wirayuda said.
About the 14th ASEAN Summit, Wirayuda said it would focus on the application of the ASEAN Charter which came into force last December 15, 2008.
Wirayuda said serious efforts were needed in the first year to form a better ASEAN community over the next six years.
He said at the ASEAN Summit, the blueprint for the creation of an ASEAN economic community, and political and security cooperation would be approved.
The foreign affairs minister explained that at the ASEAN Summit this time, the ASEAN state/government leaders would for the first time receive representatives from ASEAN Parliamentary Association, ASEAN Youth Association, and ASEAN Civil Society Group.
Wirayuda said further that issues related to energy and food resilience, disaster management and preventive measures, and global financial crisis management would probably be discussed at the ASEAN state/government leaders' annual meeting.
Unlike previous ASEAN Summits, the event this time would be relatively short because it did not involve ASEAN's partner countries, and therefore there would be no meetings of ASEAN+1, ASEAN+3, or East Asia Summit.
ASEAN's partner countries would be involved in an ASEAN Summit in Thailand on April 10-12, 2009, Wirayuda said.
On the occasion, Wirayuda said President Yudhoyono was also scheduled to hold a bipartite meeting with the Singapore prime minister to discuss the ASEAN Summit.
