PRESIDENT RAPS REGIONAL CHIEFS NEGLECTING HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

Lamongan, Indonesia, Feb 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has reprimanded several regional administration chiefs for neglecting development of public housing, particularly for low-income families, in their respective jurisdiction.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the dedication of healthy low-cost housing units built by Real Estate Indonesia (REI) members under the national 100,000 housing development program, centered at the Griya Indah Estate in Lamongan, East Java, on Tuesday, the head of state said some local administrations had remained unresponsive to the program.

"The central and regional administrations must remain committed to developing public housing. Many local administration heads are already good and have given much support to low-cost housing and infrastructure development but some others remain unmoved," he said.

The president reminded them that the government had already issued Government Regulation Number 38 of 2007 obligating local administrations to develop public housing.

"Therefore, call for immediate development of public housing," he said.

East Java Governor Soekarwo in his report said development of low-cost housing in the province in 2007 reached 10,000 units and rose to 11,000 units in 2008.

The number of low-cost houses dedicated by President Yudhoyono on Tuesday reached 114,525 units spread in 1,086 locations across Indonesia. The project was carried out between November 2007 and December 2008.

On the occasion the president handed over a downpayment assistance to military and civil servant buyers of the houses.
