NIHR calls on Qatar to cancel ‘arbitrary’ decision

Manama, Sep. 15 (BNA): The National Institution for Human Rights (MCHR) has expressed deep regret over Qatar’s withdrawal of the citizenship of Shaikh Talib bin Mohammed bin Lahoom bin Shuraim Al-Murrah, along with his 54-member family, including children and women, and the confiscation of their assets. The NIHR called on the Qatari government to cancel its “arbitrary” decision and reinstate the citizenships of Shaikh Talib and his family, and to return their confiscated assets, as they have not committed any terrorist or illegal acts. The NIHR also called on the Qatari authorities to respect the freedoms of opinion and expression, which are guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and all relevant international human rights conventions and instruments. The NIHR also called on the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) in Qatar to assume its role and seek to reinstate the citizenship of Shaikh Talib and his family and follow up on the return of their confiscated assets, stressing that the Qatari NHRC, being a member of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, should be responsible for solving the case.
